← Moser's Worm Problem / Rounds / Round 3
Rather than generating curves randomly from arbitrary coordinates, the search space is now constrained in reverse, starting from a target contact ledger, with mirror symmetry enforced to eliminate chirality false alarms at the parameter level. The five-link curve outperforms the three-link curve, but the seven-link curve does not outperform the five-link curve — the currently effective degrees of freedom are not the number of segments.
Relationship to other packages, stated as far as possible in the document's own words, not my interpretation.
“Increasing to seven segments does not yield further improvement; the added parameters largely degenerate into nearly parallel sub-segments… the currently effective degrees of freedom are not the ‘number of segments,’ but rather: whether a new, independent, movable vertex can be added; whether the lowest-phase branch can be raised; whether endpoint and interior contacts can be reassigned without creating a new, more easily placed phase; and whether multiple local minima can be raised simultaneously.” — excerpted from Section 6, “Degrees-of-Freedom Validity Determination,” of this package's main document.
