## Refinement Chain / Closure Algebra: Transition History and Freedom Tail Certificates

**Version:** reconstructed-v1 · 2026-10-08
**Nature:** Reconstructed from R18's next-step proposal and R20's summary references to R19. The original R19 text, program and conversation have not been recovered; this edition introduces the notation, ledger format and examples below.

## 1. Connecting three kinds of transition

R18 distinguishes MOTION, NORMALIZATION and REFINEMENT, as well as representation birth and active freedom birth. R19's task is to connect those single-step records into

\[
S_0\xrightarrow{\tau_0}S_1\xrightarrow{\tau_1}\cdots.
\]

Every \(S_k\) retains its stage, geometry, task value Q, assumptions used and certificate ancestry. Every \(\tau_k\) retains its operation, input/output references, active birth, geometric and task residuals, and authority level.

## 2. Three residual measures are not interchangeable

This reconstruction uses

\[
d(S_k,S_{k+1})\le g_k,
\qquad |Q(S_k)-Q(S_{k+1})|\le q_k.
\]

Here g_k is the geometric residual and q_k the task residual; the added representation segment count or active birth is recorded separately as b_k. Increasing the segment count provides no automatic bound on g_k or q_k; deleting segments by normalization does not automatically establish that task semantics are preserved without degradation.

## 3. Finite-chain composition rule

For M>N, the triangle inequality gives

\[
d(S_N,S_M)\le\sum_{k=N}^{M-1}g_k,
\qquad |Q(S_N)-Q(S_M)|\le\sum_{k=N}^{M-1}q_k.
\]

This rule composes only established single-step contracts sharing the same metric, Q and parameter conventions. Residuals q_k for different task targets, or residuals supported only by samples, cannot enter the same certificate merely through relabelling.

## 4. Freedom Tail Certificate

If there are verifiable tail bounds

\[
G_N\ge\sum_{k\ge N}g_k\to0,
\qquad R_N^Q\ge\sum_{k\ge N}q_k\to0,
\]

then the geometry chain and task values are Cauchy. If the ambient state metric space is complete and the constrained domain is closed under limits, an admissible limit state exists; if Q extends with compatible continuity, its task value is determined by the limiting values.

This is a conditional closure algebra. Output from a finite prefix cannot by itself establish that every future step satisfies the same tail bound.

## 5. Freedom birth and residual convergence can coexist

In an abstract residual-ledger example, set b_k=1 and q_k=2^-k at every step. The total number of births then grows without bound with N, while the task tail is a convergent geometric series. This merely shows compatibility between the two measures; it does not construct an actual broadworm-optimal chain.

Another example is exact dormant refinement: subdivide the same segment indefinitely. The representation segment count grows while the trace, Q and residuals remain unchanged. This should not be recorded as new evidence of active geometric freedom.

## 6. Minimal proof DAG

```text
single-step preconditions
→ operation semantics
→ g_k / q_k bound
→ finite composition
→ uniformly valid tail bound
→ Cauchy property
→ admissible limit
```

Every node retains dependencies, evidence, scope and OPEN status. Failed steps are not deleted from the graph; retain failed edges and alternative routes instead.

## 7. Why R20 still adds Gate 0

The preceding argument closes only a given chain. To connect it to

\[
A_n=\sup_{\gamma\in\Gamma_n}Q(\gamma),\qquad
A_\infty=\sup_{\gamma\in\Gamma}Q(\gamma),
\]

one also needs to know that the candidate values really are A_n, that the finite stages \(\Gamma_n\) approximate the entire \(\Gamma\) sufficiently, and that Q has an appropriate stability modulus. R20's Gate 0 is precisely finite-stage exactness; internal Cauchy closure does not imply actual finite-stage optimality.

## 8. Next handoff point

Keep ancestry, representation stage, active birth, g_k, q_k, tail modulus and normalization semantics in separate fields. Then connect the global obligations individually through R20's G0–G4, R21's finite-stage audit and R22's approximation bound.

This edition restores the missing readable logical bridge from R18 to R20. It does not promote broadworm G0, the subsequent conditional monotonicity and uniqueness statements, or the global worm problem to completed status.
